Yeah, that’s how long I was at Urgent Care this afternoon. Gives the word “urgent” a whole new meaning!
Oh. WHY was I at Urgent Care? See, it’s like this. I feed the cats canned food with a pop-top lid. I started that because Ginny barely ate when I first got her home, and I was worried about her losing weight. So this morning, I sort of cut myself. Sort of as in I put a hole in my thumb over the knuckle — a hole about as wide around as a pencil eraser, and not a whole lot shallower. However, it was 5:15 in the morning and Urgent Care doesn’t open that early. So I bandaged myself, and eventually went to work. There I used masking tape and taped a stubby pencil to the thumb to keep it from bending, since it was right over the knuckle and it really liked to bleed. I knew I had a tetanus shot in 1995 from my doctor in Syracuse, but I couldn’t remember if I had one in Wisconsin. But at some point I was smart and put that doctor’s business card in my wallet, so I called them on my cell phone. They looked at my records and they had never given me a tetanus shot, so I knew that it was unavoidable.
Once Urgent Care opened, though, they couldn’t find a sub to work for me for who knows how long. It didn’t hurt much, though, so I stayed on and then just left as soon as the kids did. Thus I got there at 2:50. I got into a room at ten after four, but then they make you turn your phone off, so I couldn’t keep track of how long everything was after that.
I really didn’t think I’d get stitches — not because the wound wasn’t deep enough but because it was a hole and I wasn’t sure the skin would stretch enough to cover the hole. It didn’t exactly, but she (Dr. Smith) did the best she could with three stitches. I must tell you, though, that it hurt enough when she was giving me shots to numb it that it made me wonder how the stitches themselves could possibly be any worse! So now it actually hurts more than it did all day. And in ten days I get to go back and get the stitches out, but I don’t have to wait in the waiting room for that!
So that was my day, or at least part of it! More tomorrow, this time about my great weekend!
